Gut Health: It Starts From The Inside!

Gut Health: It Starts From The Inside!

Think about your gut health for a second… yes, we’re serious! When we think about our overall wellbeing, so much of it comes back to gut health. Skin, digestion, immunity, and even mood are all influenced by what’s happening inside.
People have spent years learning how to support and balance their gut health and our pets are no different.
Now think about your dog or cat. Ever notice how things seem to pop up all at once? Itchy skin, tummy troubles, picky eating, low energy… more often than not, it can all be connected back to one place: the gut. For dogs and cats, gut health is about far more than digestion. A healthy gut helps support immunity, nutrient absorption, skin health, energy levels, and overall wellbeing, just like us.

So what is gut health?

Your pet’s digestive system is home to billions of beneficial bacteria (often called the gut microbiome). These tiny helpers break down food, absorb nutrients, support the immune system, and keep everything running smoothly. When the gut is balanced, pets tend to feel their best. When it’s out of balance, the body often finds ways to let us know.

Signs your pet may need digestive support:

  • Loose stools or inconsistent poop
  • Excess gas or tummy sensitivity
  • Frequent itching or skin irritation
  • Excessive paw licking
  • Picky eating or reduced appetite
  • Recurring digestive upset
  • Low energy or changes in mood

A gentle reminder: we always encourage speaking with your vet if something feels off. We’re not veterinarians, and gut health is often just one piece of the bigger picture. If your pet is showing unusual symptoms, it’s always best to check in with the experts. These are just things we have experienced over many years with our pets and all of our lovely customers 💛

Why gut health matters

Digestion and nutrient absorption
A healthy gut helps pets properly break down food and absorb the nutrients they need. Even the highest quality diet won’t do its job if the digestive system isn’t functioning well. Digestion is what unlocks all the goodness in their bowl.

Immune support
A large part of the immune system lives in the gut, which is why balance here is so important. When the gut is thriving, the body is better able to protect and support itself.

Skin and coat health
Sometimes itchy skin starts from the inside out. Digestive imbalance can show up as dry skin, dull coats, or irritation. That’s why skin support and gut support often go hand in hand.

Better poops, yes really.
Poop is one of the clearest windows into gut health. Consistency, shape, and quality can tell us a lot about how well your pet is digesting their food.

The good news? Gut health doesn’t have to be complicated. Simple daily additions can make a big difference in supporting digestion and making mealtime more exciting too.

Our favourite gut supporting additions 🐾

🦠 Probiotics
Probiotics help support healthy gut bacteria and digestive balance. They can be especially helpful for pets with sensitive stomachs, inconsistent stools, or those going through a digestive off phase. One of our favourites is Thrive ProGut Probiotic Fusion, which combines digestive enzymes, fibre, and soothing ingredients like slippery elm to support the full digestive tract. For a more treat style option, Thrive Flow Chews are a great alternative for picky pets.

🍖 Bone Broth & 🥛 Goat Milk
These are two of our go-to ingredients for both digestion and hydration.
Bone broth is soothing, flavourful, and hydrating, perfect for picky eaters or pets who need a little extra encouragement at mealtime. Always make sure you are using pet safe options, as human versions can be way too high in sodium. We love Open Farm Bone Broth for an easy, ready to serve option.
Goat milk is another powerhouse ingredient, packed with probiotics, enzymes, and nutrients that support digestion. It is also naturally rich in electrolytes, making it extra nourishing and hydrating. Whether powdered, liquid, or frozen, it is a fan favourite for picky eaters. Our go to's are Happy Days Goat Milk Powder and Big Country Raw Frozen Goat Milk.

Digestive toppers & Tripe 🐄
Digestive toppers are an easy way to add variety, flavour, and gut friendly support to everyday meals.
Freeze dried and gently processed toppers are popular because they are simple, nutrient dense, and easy to use daily. When choosing toppers, look for high quality, minimally processed ingredients to keep things gentle on sensitive stomachs.
And then there is tripe. Smelly? Absolutely. Worth it? 100 percent. Tripe is incredibly nutrient rich and naturally supports digestion, which is why pets love it so much.
We love options like K9 Natural Lamb Green Tripe Booster, PetKind Tripe Dry, and PetKind Tripe Cans, different textures, same gut loving goodness. This is especially helpful for picky pets that don't seem interested in food. We have found through our experiences that tripe works almost every time!

Omegas
When we think of omegas, we often think of shiny coats and healthy skin, but they can support the gut too!
Omegas help support a healthy inflammatory response in the body, including the digestive tract. For dogs with sensitive stomachs or digestive upset, omegas may help support overall gut comfort while also benefiting the immune system (which is closely connected to gut health). Think of it as support from the inside out.
Happy tummies = happier pets! Thrive Omega Oils are designed to support your pets over all wellbeing, and they come in a variety of flavours. Salmon and Herring for the pets that love fish and their rich natural omegas. As well as Hemp Seed and Ahiflower for those that are a little more sensitive to animal proteins but still need a good omega boost.

Gut health is not about doing everything perfectly, it is about small supportive choices that help your pet feel their best from the inside out. A little goes a long way, and expanding options for meal time is something you will thank yourself for in the future. Your pet could become less picky, enjoy every meal, and let you know what makes them feel good! Whether it is a scoop of probiotics, a splash of bone broth, or a sprinkle of their favourite topper, these little additions can go a long way in keeping tails wagging and tummies happy 🐾💛
